Görlitz is the easternmost city in Germany. It was almost completely spared from destruction during World War II. The historic old town was preserved. It provides a perfect backdrop for films set in the past. For Around the World in 80 Days, a huge statue was erected on the lower market ("Untermarkt"), against which Jackie Chan is thrown. As if that wasn't enough, the poor man also loses his pants in the process.
Chan sprinting down Nikolai Street. Even at 50, he still had a good running stride. But my all-time favorite running scene of him remains his sprint out of the tunnel in Police Story 2.
The colorful Chan, who looks like he just came from a Holi festival, sprints after Phileas Fogg's hot air balloon. He tries to shake of his evil pursuers with a couple of wooden barrels.
The facade-climbing Chan disappears into a window on the top floor. When I was there, the window was still open. I interpreted that as an invitation, but my girlfriend told me not to climb up.
The red brick facades of the Landskronbrauerei ("Landskron-Brewery") serve as New York's harbour in the film. Founded in 1869, the thriving beer-manufactory is now classified as an industrial monument.
Phileas Fogg and his Kung Fu trained valet Passepartout are on their way to the gallery. Our two main protagonists are shadowed by the villains, led by superkicker Ken Lo.
